Sexy Food to take it up a notch

According to the dictionary, aphrodisiac food really falls into two categories. Food that actually produces an ingredient that stimulates blood flow and libido (like zinc) and food that visually conjures up sexual imagery. The Oyster is one of those foods that fill the bill on all fronts – its plump shape is visually stimulating while leaving a sensuous feel in the mouth. Plus its got that all important aphrodisiac ingredient, zinc.

Shape: You don’t have to look too hard (no pun intended) to find the phallic symbols in food. Carrots, asparagus, bananas (ever notice how a woman eating a banana or a strawberry can literally stop traffic). All conjure up sexually imagery. Avocados, melons, figs, oysters (there they are again) can visually replicate both female and male sexual organs and have an aphrodisiac effect on the mind.

Feel: Foods rich in flavour and texture that have a certain sensuous feel in the mouth are at the very least sexy. Chocolate, avocado, figs, pineapple, honey, grapes, strawberries (especially dipped in chocolate) all provide a stimulating effect that heightens the appetite for more of whatever you’re looking for.

Ingredients: Zinc is a natural ingredient that has a proven effect on libido, So does potassium and B vitamins. Stimulants in moderation, such as caffeine in coffee and chocolate and alcohol in wine can provide heighten sensual pleasure.

In the book: Intercourse – an aphrodisiac cookbook, which profiles couples’ personal experiences, one of the stories is of the woman who surprised her husband with a thoroughly decadent chocolate cake. The fact that she served it nude with a few well-placed squirts of whipping cream (use your imagination) definitely made for an aphrodisiac experience.

For some great reading on the subject try: www.gourmetsleuth.com/aphrodis_foods.htm or the book, Intercourses: an aphrodisiac cookbook. The latter has some tried and true (if you know what I mean) recipes for creating your own aphrodisiac dishes.

Editors note:
Any discussion or research of aphrodisiacs will ultimately unearth questionable ingredients from wild animals, many of which are endangered. It is unlawful to trade in such ingredients and one should report the trade in wild animal parts to authorities.
